Built in the 1660s, the Royal Citadel has been instrumental in Plymouth's defence ever since: the 29 Commando Regiment of the Royal Artillery are still based here. From May to September, English Heritage run historic tours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays - you can book tickets online, or turn up to buy them at 2.15pm at the main gate of the Citadel if there are any left. As it's still a military base, ID with name and address is required.
