Salt has been extracted from underneath Cheshire since Roman times, but the Romans didn't have the equipment of Henry Ingram Thompson, whose vast factory, built in 1894, produced salt for customers across the world for almost a century. Discover how the works operated, and the history of the site, at the Lion Salt Works, on Ollershaw Lane in Marston, from 10.30am this Sunday.
